The Great Train Robbery

Bruce Reynolds

A thief and an antiques dealer, Reynolds was the mastermind behind the robbery. After the heist, he fled to Mexico, then Canada. He was finally arrested after returning to England in 1968, where he was sentenced to 25 years in prison, and released in 1978. He was jailed again in the 1980s for 3 years for dealing amphetamines.

Roy James

A silversmith and racing car driver. He served 12 years of his 30 year sentence. He was jailed again in 1993 for 6 years because he shot his wife's father and hit his wife with a pistol. Died age 62.

Ronald "Buster" Edwards

Former boxer and club owner. He is believed to be the man who attacked Jack Mills, the driver of the Up Special that night. Edwards fled to Mexico for three years before finally giving himself up in 1966. He served nine years in jail, and after his release sold flowers outside London's Waterloo Station. He was found hanged in his garage at age 62 in 1994.


Brian Field

A crooked solicitor. Used to buy Leatherslade Farm. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison, a sentence later reduced to 5 years. He died in a motorway crash in 1979.

Tommy Wisbey

A bookie. Chosen because of his large build to frighten postal staff on train. Sentenced to 30 years in prison, released in 1976. He was jailed again for 10 years for dealing cocaine. Ran a flower stall after being released.

Bobby Welch

A nightclub boss. Sentenced to 30 years for the robbery. He was crippled by a bad leg operation later in life. He became a car dealer and gambler after release from prison.

Gordon Goody

A hairdresser. Sentenced to 30 years for the robbery. He moved to Spain to run a bar after being released from jail in 1975.

Charlie Wilson

Was responsible for dividing the money between the gang. The second of the gang to be captured and put in jail. Sentenced to 30 years, he escaped prison after four months. He lived in Canada for 4 years before being recaptured. He served a decade in jail and moved to Spain after his release. Wilson died in 1990 after being shot by a hitman on a bicycle.

James Hussey

A decorator. Sentenced to 30 years in prison and released in 1975. Hussey was later jailed again for a drug smuggling conspiracy with Wisbey.

Roger Cordrey

A florist. He was sentenced to 20 years in jail, but this was later reduced to 14 years.

Jimmy White

A former paratrooper. Sentenced to 18 years in prison after spending 3 years on the run.

Bill Boal

An engineer. He was arrested with Cordrey. His original sentence of 24 years was reduced to 14, but he diidn't live to see the end of either sentence. Bill Boal died of cancer in jail in 1970.

Leonard Whitefield

A merchant seaman. His original sentence of 25 years was reduced to 5 years.

John Wheater

A solicitor sentenced to 3 years in prison for conspiring to pervert the course of justice.
