The gang's plan was to masquerade as an army unit on night maneuvers on the way to the crossing where they stopped the train. They had obtained uniforms, vehicles and fake official papers to accomplish this. When they arrived, Edwards and two others would cover their uniforms with blue coveralls and make their way onto the train, which would stop at a faked red signal set up by Roger Cordrey. Once on bard, they would disconnect the rest of the train and take it to where they had the trucks waiting. From here, they would load the trucks and make a clean getaway to a farmhouse 20 miles away.
Unfortunately, Reynolds had not covered his tracks in purchasing the farmhouse and it was eventually found, leading to many arrests. The gang had planned on hiding out in the farmhouse for weeks before they found out that every major newspaper in the country would have mention of what they had done.
The gang had also used this farmhouse when waiting for the train. They had used a monopoly set and cards to pass the time while they waited to receive word of the train leaving Scotland.
After receiving word at midnight that the train was on its way the gang departed from the farmhouse to Brigedo Railway Bridge, where they rigged up the false signal with a glove and a flashlight battery.
